"these jeans are much softer than the standard rigid/raw denim. the break in period is quicker because of this. i have a few pairs of 514, 511, and 501. the fit is slimmer in the legs than a 501 but not as skinny as the 511 and the butt is the same as a 501 but with a lower rise on the waist. waist size is true."

Review 2 for Levi's 514 Tumbled Rigid Jean

"i was in the market for my first pair of raw jeans and these seemed to fit the bill.
they're really dark, almost black out of the box. soaking or washing them would probably lighten them up but i haven't done either yet. they're not as stiff as most raw denim, they're actually pretty soft. i've heard they are 'tumbled for softness,' and that cold soaking and hang-drying will get them to stiffen back up like regular raw denim, but i haven't tried it.
overall i dig the cut alot, straight and slim. i kind of wish they were slightly higher rise, but they are still comfortable as is. i bought them one size down (i am a 31 true waist measured an inch above my belly button and i bought a size 30 waist) and they were a bit tight but they stretched out to be nice and comfortable after about a weeks worth of wears.
i've had them maybe two or three weeks so far, and i'm not very rough at all on my jeans, and they still look brand new. i'm sure they'll last a good while. about the same quality denim as any pair of levi's you'll find at a store, and the stitching is perfectly fine.
leg opening on the size 30's is 7.5". i know i looked alll over trying to figure it out before i ordered so maybe that will help someone out."

"I really like skinny jeans but although I am not overweight I consider my legs to be a little to big for super skinny jeans. The fit of these jeans were my answer, it's like a skinny jean for guys with bigger hips and legs. But if you are really skinny then go for the 510 or 511."
